Spa-Francorchamps 01/06/2014: Formula racing newcomer Marcel Lenerz drove with an excellent fifth place in the race at Spa-Francorchamps already at the second event of the season of international occupied Formula Renault 1.6 NEC in nearby podium.
Lenerz, which is sponsored by the German ADAC Stiftung Sport because of its success in karting, shone in his debut at the legendary Formula 1 circuit in the Belgian Ardennes already in the free practice session with a second and fifth place.
In qualifying of the Formula racing entry level, set with 22 international pilots the talented German went to the eighth starting position and informed during the press conference:
“As it is also in the Formula 1 here in SPA it is necessary to use the lee of a front man optimal on the long straights. Unfortunately I did not succeed in this during qualifying and for pole position there was a lack of some tenths of a second. ”
The first race was unfortunately terminated for Lenerz after a few kilometers. In the infamous “Les Combes” curve combination, there was a violent collision with several vehicles and also the Stuart Racing youngster had to leave his totally demolished Formula Renault 1.6 to early.
Things went better in Sunday’s second race in front of an enthusiastic crowd of spectators in the popular World Series by Renault. Lenerz launched skillfully, quickly made good positions and was until shortly before the finish already on the third position. In infight with a competitor the current ADAC Karting champion lost another two positions, but was very satisfied with fifth place in the fourth Formula race of his career.
“With our performance we are already definitely on track for a podium. Maybe we reach this target in the next race in mid-July, the only German race in the series on the Nürburgring.”
