FR1.6 NEC Assen: Marcel Lenerz drives into the Top 10 in front of a great number of spectators

Assen, 03.08.2014: The Gamma Racing Days this year were also the expected crowd puller at Assen, Netherlands. As many as 80,000 spectators watched the motor sports spectacle on the challenging bike course and beside the main actors were also the youngsters of the Formula Renault 1.6 NEC in the focus of the visiting race fans and journalists.

Formula racing talent Marcel Lenerz was indeed not completely satisfied with his results after a disqualification in the first race and a good eighth place in the second race, but was impressed by the great atmosphere in the Netherlands.

“Already the event at the World Series by Renault at the Nürburgring was extremely well attended and I was surprised how many viewers had an interest for newcomers like us and have been asking for example for autographs. The Gamma Racing Days were again significantly more intense and you could feel the total enthusiasm for the subject motor sports at any time. ”

In qualifying, the track presented not with perfect grip conditions, but Lenerz placed with the ninth and eighth starting position for the two scheduled races already in the top 10 of a total 17 competitors.

After a good start he went in the first race immediately two positions to the front, but then should the Kart Champion happen a serious mistake: In the heat of the moment Lenerz overlooked during an overtaking maneuver a yellow flag, the indicated drive-through penalty he did not follow and was then disqualified by the black flag.
In the second race the ADAC Stiftung Sport Development pilot should then proceed to the finish as a good eight-placed after some long fights. Finally he was pleased with a conciliatory result of the weekend.

“The error with the yellow flag was unnecessary and cost me a good result. But we knew from the beginning that the first season will be a learning year in Formula racing and such things are just one of them. Overall, the event was a lot of fun and we will certainly implement the lessons learned in late August successfully in Zolder. ”

As part of the 24 Hours of Zolder Formula Renault 1.6 NEC starts from 28 to 30.08. in Belgium in the second half of the season.
